Before You Measure — A Few Things to Know
|
How to Take Your Measurements
Use a soft tape measure and wear minimal, form-fitting clothing. Ask a friend to help for more accurate results — especially for bust and shoulder measurements. Always measure against your body, not over bulky clothing.

Bust |
Measure around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape measure parallel to the floor. Do not pull too tight — the tape should sit comfortably. |
Breathe normally and measure on the exhale for the most accurate result. |

Waist |
Measure around your natural waistline — the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above your belly button. Keep the tape snug but not tight. |
Bend sideways — the crease that forms is your natural waist. |

Shoulder Width |
Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the edge of the other, across the back. The starting and ending points are where the shoulder seam would naturally sit. |
This measurement is especially important for blouses and tops — a well-fitting shoulder makes everything look better. |

Length / Height |
For garment length, measure from the highest point of the shoulder (near the neck) straight down to the hem. For your own height, stand barefoot against a wall. |
Garment length measurements on product pages are taken from shoulder to hem — compare these to your own torso length for the best fit. |

Fit Notes by Garment Type
Different Vicki Malone pieces are designed with different fits in mind. Here's a quick guide to how each garment type is intended to fit:
- Beth Blouse — Designed with a relaxed, boxy fit. Can be worn true to size for a relaxed look or sized up for an oversized feel. The tie closure allows for some flexibility across the bust and waist.
- Helen Top — Designed to be worn oversized — this is intentional, not a sizing issue. The wide, relaxed silhouette is inspired by the classic sailor's top.
- VEM Vest — Relaxed and easy-fitting. True to size or size up if you prefer more drape. Works well layered over a long-sleeve top or turtleneck in cooler months.
- Kirsten Shirt — A slightly oversized, relaxed fit. If you are between sizes, size down for a more fitted look.
- Dresses — Cut with ease through the body. Measure bust and waist and take the larger size if you are between the two.
- Outerwear — Designed to be worn over layers. If you plan to wear over a thick knit, consider sizing up.
A Note on Care
Because your Vicki Malone piece is made from rescued vintage or deadstock fabric, please always check the care label inside your garment before washing. As a general guide:
- Cotton and linen pieces — Hand wash cold or gentle machine wash at 30°. Lay flat to dry. Iron on a low-medium heat while slightly damp.
- Embroidered pieces — Never wring or tumble dry. Press gently with a cloth between the iron and the embroidery.
- Sheer or delicate fabrics — Hand wash cold in a gentle detergent. Reshape while damp and lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight.
- Vintage textiles — Always hand wash unless otherwise stated. Vintage fabrics can be more fragile than new — treat them gently and they will last for years.
